An umbilical hernia is congential (meaning that it has been present since birth) but can occur at any age. Many umbilical hernias which are deemed significant are repaired during childhood, but many umbilical hernias can be noticed on abdominal examination and are small enough to not need surgical repair.
Umbilical hernias are repaired very simply, by making a small incision below the belly button and either pushing the hernia sac back and repairing with a couple if sutures or if larger, a tension free mesh is used to repair the defect.
These operations can be done quickly and patients are in and out of the hospital in a matter of hours.
